Deplorable sanitation

Whether the Government is aware that sanitation is in a deplorable state in T.B. Hospital Area, Barapathar, Naspatigari and the adjoining areas?

(a)

Yes, Sir. Although conservancy staff of Shillong Municipal Board has been deployed in Barapathar, Naspatighari and adjoining areas, the sanitary condition is not quite satisfactory in these areas. The area around TB Hospital falls under the jurisdiction of Shillong Cantonment Board.

(b)

The number of Sweepers, Sanitary Inspectors and Supervisors posted in these areas?

(b)

Sir, 1(one) Sanitary Inspector, 1(one) Head Jamadar, 33(thirty three) Sweepers and 4(four) Mazdoors have been deployed for regular cleaning/ sweeping in these areas.

(c)

Whether the Government has any plan to convert service latrine into sanitary latrines in these areas?

(c)

Sir, Shillong Municipal Board has discontinued the practice of scavenging since the year 2000. Subsequently, all residences having service latrines were asked to convert to sanitary types. Schemes for converting service latrines to low cost pour flush type were also implemented in municipal area both through subsidy as well as subsidy and loan. However, there are cases of latrines which discharge directly to public drains etc., and in the above mentioned areas 58 such cases were defected and notice served whereafter 15 have converted. In case there is a requirement and the residents agree to avail loans, a scheme can be prepared for the locality.
